ABOUT ME
I am Professor of Digital Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield.
My current research focuses on digital campaigning and the role of technology in democracies. I am interested in how digital is being used in elections and what consequences these practices have for democracy. I am also particularly interested in political advertising, micro-targeting and transparency. My new book Data-Driven Campaigning and Political Parties: Five advanced Democracies Compared is published with Oxford University Press.
My previous research has looked at public attitudes towards political parties. This informed my book The Reimagined Party, published in June 2020. You can find a video of me talking about the book here.
In recognition of my work, I was awarded the 2020 Political Studies Association's Richard Rose Prize for an early-career scholar who has made a distinctive contribution to British politics. I have also previously served as Special Advisor to the House of Lords Select Committee on Democracy and Digital Technologies.
As someone interested in the public understanding of politics I am always keen to work with different audiences. Partnerships with academic and non-academic organisations are a key part of my work and I'm always keen to hear from new people. I have previously conducted knowledge exchange and consultancy work with the Labour Party, Green Party of England and Wales, Scottish National Party, Electoral Reform Society and International IDEA.
I also have a range of radio and television experience and have featured on BBC Radio 4 Today Programme, BBC News, BBC Radio 5Live, Times Radio, France 24, ITV Calendar, BBC Radio Wales and have written for The Guardian and the New Statesman.
Do please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
