ABOUT ME
I am Professor of Digital Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield.
My research focuses on digital and data-driven campaigning and the role of technology in democracies. I am interested in how digital tools and artificial intelligence is being used in elections and what consequences these practices have for democracy. My latest book Data-Driven Campaigning and Political Parties, published with Oxford University Press, explores how data is used by parties in five advanced democracies.
A key objective of my work is to promote a more evidence-based discussion of the ways in which digital technologies are actually being used by campaigners. I use a range of methods and seek to exploit different data sources to case light on practice in the digital world. I am a passionate advocate of increased data access for researchers and seek to make it easier for others to understand what is happening online.
In recognition of my work, I was awarded the 2020 Political Studies Association's Richard Rose Prize for an early-career scholar who has made a distinctive contribution to British politics. I have also previously served as Special Advisor to the House of Lords Select Committee on Democracy and Digital Technologies.
Partnerships with academic and non-academic organisations are a key part of my work and I'm always keen to hear from new people. I have previously conducted knowledge exchange and consultancy work with the UK Electoral Commission, Labour Party, Green Party of England and Wales, Scottish National Party, Electoral Reform Society and International IDEA. I also have a range of radio and television experience and have featured on BBC Radio 4 Today Programme, BBC News, Sky News, BBC Radio 5Live, Times Radio, France 24, ITV Calendar, BBC Radio Wales and have written for The Guardian, the New Statesman and the New Scientist.
I am also currently acting as Faculty Director of Research and Innovation for the Faculty of Social Sciences.
